In deciding if it is best to put new strings on a piano, you must first be able to justify the costs of restring a piano. The piano should have a good value such as a good quality name (Steinway, Chickering & Sons, Mason & Hamlin,Yamaha, Kawai, etc…) In many cases you do not need to put treble strings on. The bass strings get dirt on them and sound tubby. Replacing a few strings is also not a good idea, because the new one sounds better than the older ones, making a discerning difference in the sound. Always check with a Qualified technician, before moving forward.

Buying a piano from Craigslist may present some problems if you do not have a technician look at piano first. Crack in soundboard and cracked pin block. Piano strings are rusty and they will break. Remember cost of moving and tuning of piano after purchase. If piano not tuned in years may need at least two tunings and maybe more if not tuned on a regular basis. People tend to not tune their piano when not used and the years go by as it looks good in the living room.

Pianos are a very special instrument which need lots of attention. Do not put in a dry area without some humidity. Wood cracks, when air is dry. Put a plant near by, and when you water it, some of the water will be absorbed by the piano. In a upright piano put a jar of water inside. Board behind pedals comes off. You must add water in Winter months at least once a month. Do not put in sunlight. Your finish will fade over time. Do not put on outside wall, drafts will put the piano out of tune faster. Do not leave top on Grand open, as dust will get on soundboard and into the action. Do not move your piano by yourself to save money. Have a professional mover do it. Pianos get damaged and people hurt their backs.

The two bulb lamps are obviously much better for reading, and leaving no shadows on the sheet music. The different types include Grand piano lamps, spinet and console lamps, and Upright piano lamps for older pianos. Also there are goose neck lamps that move around on a flexible shaft. Lamp prices vary, starting at around $50.00 and go up into the hundreds. Also there are many styles to choose from. Take your time and enjoy shopping for one.

To replace strings on a piano is rather difficult. The action on an upright should be taken out so as to not interfere with dampers on action. The other problem is the string or not does not stay in tune,so it must be re-tuned in a week or so. Any other option is cheating the customer. The technician should tell his customer of this situation. This is because it cost extra money to return, and touch up string. Obviously, this cost more money. At this time I usually tell customer of total cost for string, and to return at a later time to touch up. In some cases it may need a third touch up.

You must realize if you have a Grand, you need to find a local mover who can take it to a store,or area where it can be set up and looked at. The Mover who will be delivering it to the out of state needs it set up. The reason for this is,they want to know if there are any problems,or damage to the cabinet, or action, before they move it. There is usually an amount of time,(week or more) before other mover can pick it up. Also they will want to deliver it to a location, where a local mover can deliver it to your new home. Be sure to look into this ,before making your decesion.

In most cases to move a Grand piano, I suggest you have a professional piano mover. They will break it down and move a grand piano to another area, out of the way. Another possible way would be put it on its side, on a four wheel dolly, which will make it easy to move around with two people. Remember the legs and pedal lyre must come off to do this. So its worth investing in a qualified piano mover. Yes the piano may go out of tune also with the move. I suggest you could find a package deal with the move and tuning. If you feel the tuning is not necessary, see if you can put it off for a few months. Some pianos hold there tune better than others.

Never place your piano in the Sun. Over time it will fade the finish. never place your piano over a heat vent, as it will dry out the wood and crack your soundboard or pin block. Also your tuning will be effected by theses different places. Inside walls are best where there are no drafts. Pianos are like people, they are affected by the weather. Also concerning Grand pianos, caster cups should be used, as not to ruin your carpeting and wood floors.
